"Mullahpalooza tour" is the process of engaging local mullahs in Afghanistan by U.S. Marine Corps Muslim chaplains. For instance, maulana Lt. Cmdr. Abuhena Saifulislam, one of the two U.S. Navy imams, spent an entire month meeting and worshiping with local mullahs. The reasoning behind such meetings is that the failure to interact with the Afghan clergymen made it easier for them to be swayed by the Taliban.
Maulana Saifulislam held his first session with religious leaders in Helmand, Afghanistan. The participating local clerics initially thought the clean-shaven Saifulislam was an impostor. Eventually the Marine Corps officer led the group in noontime prayers. Before he had left, everyone wanted to take pictures with him.
Brig. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, the top Marine commander in Afghanistan, commented "The mullahs of Afghanistan are the core of society." He added "Bypassing them is counterproductive."
